SaltaireArts.com Saltaire is an urban village in West Yorkshire, England. Its name comes from Sir Titus Salt, a Victorian industrialist and philanthropist who built his huge and highly successful mill (1853)on the bank of the river Aire. However, Sir Titus didn't just build a mill. He created a whole village of stone-built dwellings, aiming to give his employees the best possible living conditions in an era when many working-class people were confined to disease-ridden slums. The architecture of the mill, the village, and associated public buildings (including the splendid Congregational church) is unique and attracts many visitors every year. When, due to changes in economic conditions in the late twentieth century, the mill had eventually to go out of business local enterpreneur Jonathan Silver had the vision to acquire the magnificent building and turn it into SALTS a high-quality retail centre which also houses a very large collection of work by his friend David Hockney, a Bradford-born artist with a worldwide reputation. Due to its historical and aesthetic importance Saltaire was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Saltaire Arts is an open group of artists, photographers, writers, musicians, sculptors, potters, & other people with a creative vocation, together with fans, helpers, and supporters.
